In my "big swarm" colony, since week 1, a group of bees have been loitering at the front - kind of how you see kids hanging out the local Co-op.

They're there whenever I go out in the garden - early morning, late evening. They're all alive too.

What's the deal?

Probably drugs...they may have found the locally grown cannabis plants and are now stoners.
According to latest BBKA mag the major pollen in Pitcairn Islander honey is cannabis...the islanders (all 54 of them) deny it even exits on the island.

Does this describe them at all:- They hang around the entrance - some trembling. Occasionally, some are dark and shiny. You might find dead ones on the grass outside of the entrance - more than you would usually expect to see outside a hive. Some might be walking away from the hive. Usually occurs in a large colony however.

Not at all Adam it's quite confusing. They really do look like they're just having a little social gathering. They're not the hive being bothered by wasps either.
