General Q&A, Bee chat and only Bee chat please

Please can anyone advise. I have a compost bin which hasn't been used for sometime. Whilst working in the garden yesterday I noticed bees going in and out of the opening of the hatch at the base of the container. I am assuming there is a nest in there, as they wouldn't be collecting pollen from in there. If there is a nest, I don't want to disturb them, but is it likely they will remain there or will they move on at the end of the season? I would like, eventually, to use the compost bin again, but I don't want to spoil the nest. Can you advise of the best course of action please.

Hello Rob..if it is Bumble Bees you have in your compost bin they will usually start dying of in Autumn..if it is Honey Bees you will need a competent person to remove them safely ..

Where are you located Rob?

And do you have any photos?

Bees going into a nest low down is most likely to be bumblebees. They will disburse in later summer - queens will mate and hibernate until they come out next year.

A photo of the bees would help proper identification enormously.

Thanks all for your replies, can't seem to attach photos to this response, however, looking at images on line I think they are Bumble Bees. Can I do something about it in the Autumn?

Once the bees have stopped flying and died off in Autumn you will be able to seal the hole to stop it happening next year..
