Hi All, we have just required a large amount of honey, we do know the keeper and all his info,ie location of his hives, when it was harvested, but do we need to label our jars with all his details when selling the honey or can we just sell without labels and tell the customer the details.

as far as im aware with food standards its about the tracking. so you can put your details on the label as your selling it :D you jest need to keep a record of where the product was sourced from.

as for the location if it was made in Lincolnshire it has to be either honey or Lincolnshire honey you can then say its Norfolk honey ect

Hi Bossy 64, welcome to the Forum!

Selling without labels is a definite no-no. It's all about the selling part really, you could give it away how you like but once you start to sell it - then you need to think like a small scale food producer and act like one. You do sometimes see folk protesting about food regs, but if you think like a customer instead of a producer, then most of them have a good common sense reasoning behind them. Is the honey from last year or this? If it is granulated in buckets, check it is not "heaving" or partly fermented as that could indicate an overly high moisture level - the legal limit is 20% water content.

Are you beekeepers as well? How are yours doing?

Thanks for the reply, the honey is this years ( he did it last week ) the bees are kepted on our growing site the deal is we get half of anything they produce. This is first year with the bees he’s only been a bee keeper since Easter of this year. Everything’s in accordance with the BBKA, the little darlings have produce 27 kilos of the most lightes tasting honey.
We sell our veg & want to sell the honey, I have found that he left us information about labelling the honey,so will see on the internet for printing labels ,we need them for Thursday.
Thank you

Wow they have to give you half of what they produce! The person who has my bees on his land, he just gets one jar free then has to buy the rest for him to sell in his shop.

With the labelling make sure you add the word 'honey', your address (part - not full), a LOT number this'll be your first so something like 'LOT: 001' and a best before date... most people go 5 years '2023'.

Thorne's do some nice labels and their form is quite intuitive so you'll have all the correct information on it.

Get yourself a small set of gram scales (1000 - 2000g) about £10 and make sure jars aren't under weight or grossly over.
Weigh about 10 empty jars to get a nominal jar weight and then add the weight to the jar contents weight other wise you could be fined by an over zealous trading standrds if a complaint is made, things do get a bit silly sometimes.

Nothing to with honey or bees but recently a supermarket chain was fined 9K for an online shop, the customer asked for it bagless and it arrived bagged. Thye complained and it led to a hefty fine for 40p's worth of bags. These idiots are out there and some like to cause mischief.
